Spring 2008

Up with the New

Visitors to our campground this spring will witness another improvement. A new metal building is being built on the site of the old Mission Cabin to house our staff, dean, and missionary. The new building, 30 feet wide and 80 feet long, will replace the Dean's Cabin and the old Mission Cabin, both of which are over 60 years old.

The new building will have a large meeting room for faculty meetings or classroom space in inclement weather. Closets, a fireplace and a kitchenette will make the great room functional.

Each staff member will have a private room with bath. We have four rooms of 150 square feet each, designated for staff members. The bathrooms are also spacious and will offer privacy and convenience. Though we will work with window air conditioners this year, we plan to install central air and heat in the near future.

Many of our buildings have particleboard walls, but we will cover the walls of the new building with drywall. This surface will give us an attractive building that should last many years. Insulation throughout the building will make it usable even in spring and fall. We expect to offer the use of the building to small groups for use as a retreat center.

We will need many volunteers to finish this building by June 1st!

Left something at camp?

Each week campers arrive with a suitcase or dufflebag filled with clothing and personal items, and each week they go home leaving behind shirts, watches, razors, shampoo, or Bibles. We filled six 20-gallon storage tubs with items left by departing campers. Some of it may belong to you.

If you are missing any items left at camp, please call the office of Onarga Christian Church (815-268-4545) to inquire about it. If we have it, we will return it. But please note: Any items left past May 1, 2008 will be donated to Harbor House for resale by that community service organization. Check your dressers, closets, and linen cabinets, and if you're missing something, call to see if we have it.
